چکیده

An analytical and numerical study is presented of transmission of radiation through a multi-mode waveguide containing a randommedium with a complex dielectric constant ε = ε′ + iε′′. Depending on the sign of ε′′, the medium is absorbing or amplifying. The transmitted intensity decays exponentially ∝ exp(−L/ξ) as the waveguide length L → ∞, regardless of the sign of ε′′. The localization length ξ is computed as a function of the mean free path l, the absorption or amplification length |σ|−1, and the number of modes in the waveguide N . The method used is an extension of the Fokker-Planck approach of Dorokhov, Mello, Pereyra, and Kumar to non-unitary scattering matrices. Asymptotically exact results are obtained for N ≫ 1 and |σ| ≫ 1/N2l. An approximate interpolation formula for all σ agrees reasonably well with numerical simulations. Dynamics of Localization in a Waveguide

This is a review of the dynamics of wave propagation through a disordered N-mode waveguide in the localized regime. The basic quantities considered are the Wigner-Smith and single-mode delay times, plus the time-dependent power spectrum of a reflected pulse. The long-time dynamics is dominated by resonant transmission over length scales much larger than the localization length. The correspondin...

Enhancement of coherent light amplification using Anderson localization

Several aspects of interplay between Anderson localization and coherent amplification/absorption, and aspect of mirrorless laser for a laser-active (amplifying) disordered dielectric medium have been addressed. We have calculated the statistics of the reflection coefficient and the associated phase for a light wave reflected from a coherently amplifying/absorbing one-dimensional disordered diel...

Microscopic versus mesoscopic local density of states in one-dimensional localization

We calculate the probability distribution of the local density of states n in a disordered one-dimensional conductor or single-mode waveguide, attached at one end to an electron or photon reservoir. We show that this distribution does not display a log-normal tail for small n , but diverges instead }n. The log-normal tail appears if n is averaged over rapid oscillations on the scale of the wave...

Transverse localization of light and its dependence on the phase front curvature of the input beam in a disordered optical waveguide lattice

We investigate the influence of the phase front curvature of an input light beam on the transverse localization of light, choosing an evanescently coupled disordered one-dimensional semi-infinite waveguide lattice as an example. Our numerical study reveals that a finite phase front curvature of the input beam does indeed play an important role and it could degrade the quality of light localizat...

We study the statistics of the reflectance (the ratio of reflected and incident intensities) of an N -mode disordered waveguide with weak absorption γ per mean free path. Two distinct regimes are identified. The regime γN ≫ 1 shows universal fluctuations. With increasing length L of the waveguide, the variance of the reflectance changes from the value 2/15N, characteristic for universal conduct...
